This website was conceived as a companion piece to a novel I am working on. I have spent several years of my life working as a computer programmer. I decided to put my knowledge of web development in service of my work as a writer. This is the ongoing result: an interactive, fluid, and hopefully fun way to offer the reader not only some additional facets of the story to explore, but also to give them some insight into how I go about writing a story like this one.
The web component first emerged as an independent project I took on in late 2023. The poem discussed at this page cries out for the modern display capabilities of the personal computer. Web apps are now windows into a whole new reality, just as NIA has been for several generations of its few devoted readers. I began my work on the basis of previous efforts by Andrew Hugill, who first converted Roussel's poem into a digital format in the 1990s. While this certainly offered a new perspective, it still has limitations, not the least of which is its rather spartan layout and styling. With his blessing, I undertook a renovation of the site, producing my own modern and more interactive version as a single-page application. That site is still live on the internet, though you should ask me for a link directly if you want to see it. It has been/is being superseded by the work I am taking on here.
I am at work on a novel that encompasses, roughly speaking, three parts. It is, for now, structured as a triptych. The increasing commercialization of fiction, and the corresponding decline of popular interest in novels is something I lament, but I also recognize that this is no reason not to experiment, challenge the form, and make a conscious effort to appeal to contemporary sensibilities. Moreover, the motifs and ideas that run through this work cry out for a novel interpretation, one that combines computing technology with more ancient methods like pens and paper.
I completed and published my first novel in 2022. I attended the University of Colorado from 2016-2018 and graduated with a degree in international affairs. Currently, I am a student at Université Aix-Marseille, in Marseille, France, where I am working toward a Masters degree.
